Cleaners TW1 Health and Safety Policy
This Health and Safety Policy sets out the standards and procedures followed by Cleaners TW1 to protect the health, safety, and welfare of our employees, contractors, clients, visitors, and members of the public who may be affected by our cleaning activities. The company is committed to maintaining safe working conditions and promoting a positive safety culture across all locations where we operate.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Cleaners TW1 recognises that effective health and safety management is essential to the quality of our cleaning services and the wellbeing of everyone involved. Our primary objectives are to prevent accidents and work-related ill health, comply with all applicable health and safety legislation, and continuously improve our safety performance.
Management will provide adequate resources, information, instruction, and supervision to ensure that this policy is implemented effectively. Every employee has a duty to cooperate with the company in achieving high standards of health and safety and to take reasonable care of their own safety and that of others.
Roles and Responsibilities
Senior management is responsible for setting health and safety standards, reviewing performance, and ensuring that effective procedures are in place. Managers and supervisors must make sure that risk assessments are carried out, control measures are implemented, and staff are properly trained and supervised.
All employees must follow safety instructions, use equipment correctly, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, and report any hazards, near misses, or incidents immediately to their supervisor. Contractors working on behalf of Cleaners TW1 are required to comply with this policy and any additional site-specific rules.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Cleaners TW1 will identify hazards and assess risks associated with cleaning activities, including the use of chemicals, machinery, work at height, manual handling, and lone working. Suitable control measures will be introduced and documented as safe systems of work.
Risk assessments will be reviewed regularly or when there are changes to work processes, materials, or locations. Where necessary, site-specific risk assessments will be prepared to reflect particular building layouts, access arrangements, or client requirements.
Chemical Safety and COSHH
Cleaning chemicals can pose risks if used incorrectly. Cleaners TW1 will ensure that all substances are assessed and controlled in accordance with relevant regulations governing hazardous substances. Only approved products will be used, and they must be stored, handled, diluted, and disposed of strictly in line with manufacturers instructions and company procedures.
Safety data sheets will be made available for all hazardous substances, and staff will receive training on correct use, required protective equipment, first aid measures, and emergency actions in case of spills or exposure.
Personal Protective Equipment
Appropriate personal protective equipment will be provided where risks cannot be eliminated by other means. This may include gloves, eye protection, masks or respirators, safety footwear, and protective clothing. Employees must use the equipment supplied, maintain it in good condition, and report any defects immediately so that it can be replaced or repaired.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Many cleaning tasks involve lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling, which can cause injury if not performed correctly. Cleaners TW1 will minimise manual handling risks through suitable equipment, planning, and training. Staff will be instructed on safe lifting techniques and encouraged to avoid unnecessary manual handling wherever possible.
All equipment, including vacuum cleaners, scrubbers, polishers, and other machinery, will be maintained in safe working order. Only trained personnel may use powered equipment, and they must follow operating instructions and safety procedures at all times.
Work at Height and Slips, Trips, and Falls
Where cleaning requires work at height, such as the use of steps or small access platforms, the work will be planned, supervised, and carried out using suitable equipment. Unsafe practices, such as standing on chairs or makeshift platforms, are strictly prohibited.
To reduce the risk of slips, trips, and falls, floors will be kept as dry and clear as reasonably practicable. Wet floor signs and barriers will be used whenever floors are being cleaned. Staff must remove obstacles, tidy cables and equipment, and report any damaged flooring or inadequate lighting.
Lone Working and Out-of-Hours Cleaning
Some cleaning activities may take place outside normal working hours or involve working alone. Cleaners TW1 will assess the risks of lone working and implement measures such as check-in procedures, emergency contact arrangements, and restrictions on high-risk tasks when working alone.
Lone workers must remain alert to their surroundings, follow site access procedures, and report any security concerns or incidents without delay.
Training, Information, and Supervision
All employees will receive appropriate induction training covering company health and safety rules, emergency procedures, safe cleaning methods, and correct use of equipment and chemicals. Additional task-specific training will be provided where necessary.
Ongoing supervision will ensure that safe practices are followed consistently. Refresher training and toolbox talks may be delivered to address new risks, reinforce important messages, or respond to incidents and near misses.
Accidents, Incidents, and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses, and dangerous occurrences must be reported promptly to the appropriate supervisor or manager. Cleaners TW1 will investigate incidents to identify root causes and implement measures to prevent recurrence.
Employees will be informed of emergency arrangements for each site, including fire evacuation routes, alarm signals, assembly points, and first aid facilities. Staff must comply with these procedures and cooperate with fire wardens, first aiders, and emergency services.
Monitoring, Review, and Continuous Improvement
Cleaners TW1 will monitor health and safety performance through inspections, audits, accident statistics, and feedback from staff and clients. This policy and associated procedures will be reviewed regularly to ensure they remain suitable, effective, and aligned with current legislation and best practice.
Suggestions for improving health and safety are encouraged from all employees. By working together, we aim to provide a consistently safe and healthy environment for our workforce, clients, and the wider community.
